2012- The year of the Flames of War Tournaments.

Well as everyone who reads this blog possibly knows I have a great love for Flames of War as a game and I love to paint 15mm stuff. So for me its a great mix, as my new years resolution was to play some more games I have decided to go down to Stafford Games on the 25th March to play in there first Avanti of 2012.

It works on a dead simple system the first one is 1500pts Early war, the one in the summer is 1750pts Mid-War and the Winter one is 1750pts Late War. I'm planning on doing all three also I'm rolling with the darkside of the game and going to all three with my Germans.

So for the EW I am planning on taking the following list.

This I hope will give me a great mix and have the ability to deal with all scenarios and all armies

I still have to slap some paint on the
Kradschutzen platoon (including the bases to represent if they come off there bikes)
Pionier Platoon
Anti Tank guns
And finally the heavy mortars

So I best get painting but it will all get done.

Bit of an update for Jan

The allies are attacking.

My local gaming store is about to start a Casino Infantry aces champaign, its been good seeing the build up and people gathering there forces over the past few weeks. I've decided to take a break from the Soviets and join the ranks of the axis powers.

My German grenadiers are done and ready for action the list for the fist turn is as follows

CHQ (include my Ace Otto Hans and his trusty dog)

1st Grenadier Platoon (2 squads)

2nd Grenadier Platoon (2 squads)

Mortar Platoon (2 Sections)

Fortification

2 Strong points (which include 1 HMG nest and 3 trenches)

The champaign starts on the 1st of feb so will have some reports and pictures of there first days in combat so keep checking.

Well what else am I doing hobby wise at the moment. Well at my gaming club there are rumblings of a Necromunda champaign, I have a great love for necromunda it was one of the first games I got into in a big way so I have dusted off the gang, stripping the paint and re painting them for the champaign.

On the more gaming side of things, The girls are coming out to play this week so will keep you posted about how they get along.

Nothing to do with Starwars

At my local friendly gaming club some of use have started a Cutlass Champaign so its all hands on deck to try and be be the best pirate or goody to shoes navy. Oh did I also say there are Ork's, Elfs, Dwarfs and Undead factions all viying for control of the island.

The models I will be using are the Pirate girls from Black Scorpion Minitures, Well as it was a Champaign and there isn't a great deal to the army and I decided to cheat painting them, I used the dip method and Im very happy how they came out. So hopefully I will post some in game pics and keep you all updated on how the girls do. Well enough waffling I best show you some pictures.

2011- The Review

Well its the end of the year and the start of the next. So what has this year brought for me personally.

Been playing more Flames of War, now have a huge Soviet armour force which can be backed up by a very large infantry support. Got a German army now see a future show case about this.
Still got an on and off relationship with Warmachine, going to try and play some more as I have a lot to draw upon and of course my new battle engine, again there will be bits and bobs about this on the blog.
New Ogre book and some sweet models.
A couple of new systems sneaked in this includes the Weird War 2 system Secrets of the Third Reich, decided to go with a US force and its got some cool bits, again this will be covered later on. Also a 20mm system for WW2 know as Kampgruppen Normandy. Very fluid system can't wait to finish and get playing.
Dystopian wars a great system and done some coverage on this blog already.

So that is a very brief review of 2011 what do I hope 2012 will bring. Well I want to play more games

More Flames of War games, I want to try my hand at some tournaments play some new people and get some experience under my belt.
Play more dystopian wars, huge FSA fleet that hasn't really been used a great deal.
Finish my Cygnar for Warmachine, made a personally promise for finishing it this year but alas didn't get there so going for fully painted by the end of 2012

Also blog more I enjoy writing all the bull crap I do so expect more of this, I'm ever so sorry about this. Now for a little treat for you all.

Army Show Case 2- US Armour Vietnam Era

Well still sticking with the 15mm scale side of things I decided to do a little army show case for my Vietnam stuff. I got interested in this side after Battlefront gave away free with Wargames illustrated a briefing book that was a rules add-on/ conversion for playing games in the opening battles of the Vietnam Conflict. Being a Tread head I decided on the US armour in the form of the very large and formidable Patton tanks.

2 ACAV Platoons, These are M113s with extra MGs used as recon vehicles, very annoying at keeping ambushes at bay and can pump out loads of rounds.

Army Show Case 1- The Soviet Tank Horde

As many people will know I am an avid Flames of War Player and have a massed a huge variety of armies from all nations and most theatres of the war.

The army which I love to use and keep on going back to every so often is my Soviet forces. First up for the show case is the armoured forces and some supporting planes.

Honey, I Shrunk the Models

As you can guess from the logo plastered across the top of this blog post were going down in scale and back in time and covering a series of blog articles all to do with either Flames of War, World War 2 based games (including zombies and kinky Germanic twin sister, oh for the love of leather).

So what will be covered in this series of blogs which will all carry the WW2 tag, well as its my blog it will cover stuff I do and my other friends are doing. As I like lists here is a list of what I want to cover.

Army show cases, these will either be my armies or some of the great armies my friends have been working on.
Battle reports, little battles, large battle and themed games.
How to guides this will include painting, modelling.
Articles this could be on anything and everything, army building, collecting, buy, model reviews etc

Massive Steampunk Post 2

They're eyeing up your brass balls and you time dilation cogitator.

Now I've used the age old marketing technique of using boobs and women to get your attention I would like to talk about a very serious subject now. Mainly how awesome Dystopian Wars is. By and large this is going to be a biased review intersperse with women in leather corset, top hats and maybe welding goggles. Now stop looking at the boobs and start reading this blog post.

The cover says it all.

The cover of the book generally sums up the whole ethos of the game, but I better try and describe some of the back ground as I understand it. With the initial release we got four nations,

The Prussian Empire- pre WW1 Germans for you, I repeat NOT NAZIS.
Empire of the Blazing Sun- Japanese with train ships and no Kamikazes, I REPEAT NO FRICKING KAMIKAZES.
Kingdom of Britannia- Yeah the British empire is around kicking ass and drinking tea (tea is great).
Federated States of America- The south won the civil war so I can only say it seems to be rednecks on paddle boats.

Basically the fluff has everyone pissing each other off and all the joys of fiery death can be unleashed upon anyone you so please. Spartan games have released another faction known as the Covent of Antarctica which will get a review of models etc when mine finally turn up.

So I best try and be adult about all this as its my first review e.t.c. Firstly the book is really well printed and very good quality for the price you pay around the £15-£17 pound range depending who your favourite retailer is. The rule book is mainly rules no huge amount of fluff in there which I personally like, Other companies seem to over charge for a books which is mostly fluff with rules. To be said the book can be a pain and a chore to read at times as some rules are convoluted and not easy to understand, the layout also can be a pain but careful reading and post-stick notes sort this problem out. Also with a lot of small companies published releases there can be spelling, formatting or missing information, either through editing misses or improper measures taken for proofing. please if anyone reads this pay for a proof reader to go through it before its sent to printers. Anyway thanks for reading the first part of this review I think you all deserve a treat.

Thats what is known in advertising and media as a mid way treat. OK people can i get your attention back and focusing on this review, sure her gun is lovely and we all worried about the possible health and safety implications of spinning gears and show girl dress interactions but please you got to carry on reading.

As with all games systems the models are the main point of it all, and as usual the cleaver chaps at Spartan games have pulled it again All the factions from a personal point of view have an style and design which is unique and fits really well with the overall steam punk theme.

Massive Prussian robot just wants a hug, a hug as in blows your head off with a cannon hug.

Massive Japanese walkers, at least there is no tentacles.

The brits turn up with St Pauls on tank tracks, how awesome is that .

So the models are great quality as well, mold lines are minimal, the resin used for 99% of the models is highly dense and high quality and the models are crammed full of details. If in doubt go look at your FLGS if they stock it. Then look at the price and this is when it hits you, its great value for money. As ever all this is subjective if playing an awesome game which is simple yet tactically challenging, with great models that won't cost you the earth to by, by a company that listens to its customers and fan base and actively encourages people to write stories, fluff, rules, and scenarios for its games, I suppose there is always other games you can play with 9ft tall xenophobic super men in tank armour.

So best finish off this blog post with some sort of rating based system so overall I will give Dystopian Wars a

Well firstly a quick hello to anyone who reads this blog it has been a while, so what have I been doing the past month or so since the last blog. Well Its all to do with the very fine game called Dystopian Wars published by Spartan Games, Go check out there ranges if you haven't already at

Well lets show you some pics of the models, Firstly I have chosen to do the FSA, which is basically are Colonial Cousins i.e The Americans. With the game setting the south won the ACW so you can't really call them the yanks (to any American readers what would be an appropriate slang term for southerners)

These first shots are of W.I.P as you can see the navel units do have something of a paddle boat steamer feel to them. This I like properly not to everyone's cup of tea but I like it so that's what I care about. I have chosen to base my navel units as it makes the model easier to handle and easier to move in game. These are made by simply cutting regular uniform shapes from about 1 mm plastic card, putting filler on the base and attempting to shape the filler to make it look as if the model is moving through the water.

Well sorry for the delay loyal readers and followers, been a bit busy in real life so had to take a break from blogging but have no fear I will carry on. There is also a slight change in schedule there will be no weekly Monday blog post. All your news, reviews and hobby thoughts can be found on other blogs this is more of a blog for what I personally do. For an extra special treat of blog goodness I have decided to combine last week’s blogs into one mega blog. So you are getting some finished pictures and some work in progress shots.

So what did I manage to paint since I last posted, well firstly there is Captain Darius. This model I am really proud of, had a go at using an alternative colour scheme on him and still tried to keep him looking consistent with the other Cygnar forces. I had a blast painting it and played with him at my FLGS the other week and had a blast of a game against a good friend who runs and posts on Minipainters. (www.minipainters.com)

With Darius you get to us some tiny half jacks, these again are ‘kinda cute’ (according to my sister) these took me all of 20 mins to paint bar the drying time.

Ok well with Darius being a Jack based caster I thought it best if he was joined by some Warjacks, firstly is a new plastic Ironclad, I love the new plastic based heavy kits (the lights I’m not so keen on but that is for another blog post), used the same white/grey colour as the spot colour to try and tie it in with the white/gray colour on Darius.

Well here is a new plastic light kit, this is a Firefly, cool little jack with some cool special abilities and looks cool if a little large when compared to older lights. Again very simple colour scheme with the spot colours matching Darius.

And just for another treat here is another Jack for you all too look at this time it is Thorn a special character light as of yet not used him in a game. As you can see he has the same spot colours as Darius and the other jacks I have painted lately.

I promised you all a WIP shot as a bonus because I missed my last post, so be prepared to be underwhelmed. Here it is, some tiny tanks and a massive titan for epic. The tiny tanks are from Exodus Wars range of 6 mm and will be used as chimeras and the Titan is a Warlord which I brought for cheap off a certain popular auction site, the base is very nice and it came with the auction so I was quite chuffed.

Battle Group Bonanza: Week 1, Idea and first models.

So I have decided to start blogging again, I am going for the very ambitious schedule of posts, there is going to be a structure to the blog now.

Mondays: - Are a hobby views, reviews and article day.

Thursdays: - Hobby project blog.

Sundays: - WIP Sunday.

So 3 posts a week, they will be reasonable short blogs depending upon content (and how much I can be arsed to say). So where am I starting off for this new format, well your reading the first post.

After a long absence from painting 28mm projects, I have come back with gusto to a game which I used to play and paint a lot of that is Warmachine. This latest reinvigorated interest in the games has been brought about by the release of Wrath the latest offering from Privateer Press.

So what does this have to do with this blog, well for a long while now I have had a few Mercenary models languishing in cupboards, cases and under the bed? Being on a self induced austerity measure (i.e. trying to save for a house) I’ve decided to start and finish my entire collection of Privateer Press models while limiting the amount I buy. All of them to be completed by January 1^st 2012. (That gives me 192 day or 4608 hrs or 276480 seconds). All my Privateer models will be completed. So how much is on the list? Well the long and the short of it is a lot.

As with all project, professional and hobby based ones it is easier to manage if you break the project down in to small achievable tasks which all lead to the same conclusion over the same amount of time. So how is this task going to be broken down? As you properly guessed from the title the first port of call is the battle groups.

For example this week I finished my Shae battle group (steam powered pirate jacks if you are unsure) this consisted of

To be honest not bad for a week’s painting, even though the caster was painted and the Mariner was half painted, but I still count it all.
So what does week 2 hold for me, Well it’s a swap back to the Cygnar my first love for Warmachine:

1. Captain Darius (got to love a engineer in a jack suit)

2. Half Jacks & Mine tokens. (like a really rubbish R2-D2)

3. Fire Fly (nearly finished so just added it so i would finish it)

4. Storm Clad 2

5. Iron Clad

As some of you may know I like Royal Marine/Army Commandos during WW2, the main reason for this was that during the war my Granddad served in the Royal marines, so there is also a family history. I like researching for historical project as I get too red books

So theses pics are just a little sample of the commando army which I painted from Artizan Design 28mm commando models. They are based on two pence pieces, I'm hoping they can have a face off against Anton over at http://toomuchmetal.blogspot.com/ as his lovely painted Germans would make great victims (opps I mean opposing force)

So this is the update, reboot or what not of the Cygnar Starter box, this is the plastic set and to be honest, I love it the new Stryker model and the massive light warjacks are pretty cool. Any more models to tackle and more paint to slap.

Well as all of my loyal readers can see I'm back. Well firstly where have a I been, I've been painting, reading, working and finishing my degree so kinda of forgot about the whole blog thing, but now I'm a coming out swinging ready to kick the unpainted mound of metal in the happy sack and declare victory. (Basically means painting the stuff I already have) Also making the very bold promise of not buying any new models till Christmas, that's a 2 month model buying embargo (will I survive that long, will I kick my plastic, resin and metal crack addiction, my bank balance hope so).

So what is on the planed project list.

Finish the Ogres, made a great start on them with a pledge over on the gifts for geeks forums, just need to get the rest done, then that will be 3000 pts done.
Salamanders, the defunct 2010 40k army, brought most of the infantry, all stuck together but only one squad done.
2 Island of blood Skaven sets swapped a friend for the point ears now got at least 1500pts to paint.
Get fully painted on the Cygnar, ah my first love for warmachine, can't give them up always want to add more.
Hordes, my Circle of Orboros were painted as an experiment with dipping, I like to test on metal models as one dip in the old paint and varnish stripper removes all ills, like dipping as a technique so just got a few bits to do.
My Warmachine mercs, originally done to supplement the Cygnar now taken on a life of there own (and I get to paint pirates baby!!)
And the Orks, I sure do love my Orks so many models, so much painted so far so much to paint.

Anyway as you can tell I've got a lot of painting to do. So to everyone out there, I would say this take a look at what you already have in boxes, figure cases or in the loft, dust off those hobby projects you were so excited about last year and give them the love and attention the deserve. And all you lovely people there will be loads of updates to come once the cam comes out.

Waxing Lyrical, Special Characters in Armies

I like too use SC's at times, be it the ultimate ork himself, Big Old Gazzie, or the flame death master of Vulkan. These two are my favorite at the mo. So why do I use them.

Gazzie- Well he is the very model of pure orkiness, he has a metal plate in his head and very unhinged, well I surpose anyone would be having a large proportion of his small brain destroyed by a bolt round, he has a nemisis in the form or Yarrick. He has also been in the 40k universe since 2nd ed.

Vulkan- Great buff for the whole army, a very fluff based character for what is a very underepresnted first founding chapter, for a long time up to the current Space Marine codex you only had the Big four chapter respresent in any large degree, Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Space Wolves. So for that reason alone it was good thing too add the other special charcters. Vulkan is on a quest to find the lost gifts that their Primach Vulkan left for them, so he could been seen in any situation, skirmish or battle if being there will get him the info he needs.

As I said some people on the post annoyed me with thier comment. I would be the first to admit that I'm not a great 40k player, my ork tactics are very basic for one. Some choice quotes from the comments

Partly its the constant repetition of the same lists over and over again.

Partly its the ridiculous idea that these powerful individuals are somehow involved in every pissant little skirmish in the galaxy.

If you want to win, you never make up your own characters.

Real men dont use SC's. SC's are for idiots who cant win without them. SC's are for morons who need an easy button because they cant formulate a gameplan or devise tactics

I've played Vulkan list, and personally I liked to play it espicially when a Ork boy unit, punched him out, nicked his land raider keys, stole his chips and got off with his girlfriend all in same combat.

So I guess the whole point of this post is people

Well at my local club we have decided to start a tale of X gamers type thing so we have a budget each month and we have to buy, build and paint said models brought in that month, Along the lines of the White Dwarf articles.

Well firstly Happy New Years to you all. Hope everyone is recovering from there nights excesses whatever they maybe.

And cause I couldn't find a picture of a Space Marine clutching a toilet bowl.

I've taken a queue from Ant and his blog and tried to review this years personal hobby related activities.

Well one of the surprising things for me was managing to get 90% of my Ork army. Which more photos will be appearing soon. Found out about the wonders of dipping models and using washes to get very good tabletop models out quickly.

Some conversion madness has been unleashed via GW plastics, knife, glue, plastic card and occasionally a little blood.

Also starting new armies and endeavours, i.e 200+ 1815 French Infantry to do for various historical systems.

This year also saw an increase in the Privateer Press systems becoming more popular in the local area. Mainly thanks to the LFGS Gifts for geeks and there work in increasing the popularity of the systems. This promoted me to work on finishing up my Cygnar army and work on the Circle of Orboros army I had sitting in boxes.

So in general that's been my year in hobby related activity's, hopefully 2010 will be more awesome that 2009.

Well I know a few people out there wanted me too take some snaps of my Orks so here is a few snaps of the latest model to come from the Meks workshop.

Well I had promised you all some photos for over the Christmas/ New Years period, so I thought of sharing one of my armies which I'm most proud of.

The battle box was a brought for my 21st birthday by my sister, so the paint jobs are now oldish. The rest of the army will appear over the next few days.

I'm not dead just been busy

Well firstly I'm not dead, still alive and kicking, I have been diagnosed with a mild case of cardiomyopathy so basically heart troubles. So I've been resting, taking my drugs, Mild exercise and University work.

Part of the 'resting' has involoved alot of painting. what have I finished over the past month or so.

Mega Dread from Forge world.
Mek boy, Mega Nobz and a battle wagon.
Most of my Cygnar stuff.
And started the 2010 army for 40K

So it looks like I will be taking alot of photos to put up on here for you all too see and hopefully enjoy.

Well firstly I thought I would try and update all the people who read this. My Circle for Hordes is currently complete, got plenty to play with so planning on getting some games in. So now I'm going too fix my attention on too something else. There will be pictures soon :)

Being currently a little brasso/ skint. I have looked around at projects that I have started and yet have to finish, so I'm currently looking at finishing the last models for several armies.

Unit of Longgunners, Rangers, Nemo and a few solos for my Cygnar

Stompa, Mega Dread and Warboss on Bike for the Orks

Commandos for FOW

Commandos for Rules of Engagement

I think with this list it could see me into Christmas and therefore plenty to paint and feel proud of with out spending too much cash.

Well I quite enjoyed doing this little experiment, the method I used for painting is dipping. Now got to finish and paint the rest of my circle stuff.

Well just thought I would update you all, well after a quick bath in Varnish and paint stripper, then turps then hot water and soap this is the result, not bad if I say so myself, along with Baldur I also stripped a warpwolf, two argus and Kaya. Just waiting for a few bits to turn up from privateer press, some spikes and a few little bits. So I'm going to start working on him now so will update in a couple of days.

What else have I been doing, been putting some paint on my Stompa and that is about it.

Ebay, carboots or people who are looking too shift some of there old models, these are all places where a bargin can be had. This as some people may not know is a Warlock from Hordes picked it up for a very good price, but as you can see it already has a covering of paint, this will have to be removed before I can start work on it.

Time for the rubber gloves and the paint striper.

After a bit of a think I decided to sell my Late War German Panzer Company, this was the first project which saw extensive use of my airbrush kit and portable spray bay. Realising that I had only used the army twice in the 18 months its has been painted, I put it on that well known auction site and I hope it goes to a good home.
